Kitchen Island Lighting

Do you really need to invest in kitchen island lighting? Thanks to the sun, that question is more easily answered during daytime. However, if you are one of the many people who have modernized their kitchen and added an island, you would know that an island doesn’t look very special if it is ill-lit (if it is has any island-specific lighting at all).

The thing is, like most good things, kitchen island lighting comes with a cost, and usually not at a very friendly cost. But if you would take a look at various online merchants, you would find out that not all kitchen lights are expensive (at least not by the standards of an average person, average being someone who was able to remodel and buy a kitchen island in the first place). In an effort to reduce costs, most people even try to install the whole thing – fixtures and all themselves, which isn’t a problem if they know how to. However, this may cost more in the long run.

So what are your options when it comes to lights?

Well, the most common are pendant, track, and recessed. Pendant lighting makes nice accent pieces. Some use multiple pendant fixtures since to provide more illumination, and to make it look more appealing. There is another kind of pendant lights, the one-piece tiffany style that produces more light. Track lights can add drama to your kitchen nook by giving off a spotlight effect. Recessed lights, on the other hand, provides low levels of illumination, so it is often used for ambient lighting.

Some lights also have dimmer switches to allow you to adjust the lighting level to your preferences. For example you might want more light while preparing the food and subdued lighting while dining.

Most people also make the mistake of rushing into getting and setting up a lighting system when they know zilch about lighting. It is understandable that you do not want to hire a lighting works specialist as it means more cost. In this case, you can hire an electrician instead.

The most important to keep in mind when it comes to lighting is planning. In the long run, an ill-planned remodeling project will only cost more – people end up buying items that are either unneeded or totally out of place. So you have to make a layout in order to make sure that you will not regret whatever purchasing decision you make.
